Ill be celebrating Havaianas, Ipanema and Portuguese. Ill be celebrating the protestors too, but dont worry mom Ill be celebrating them from the comfort of my couch! Brazil for two months people. Eu vou trabalhar no Portugues e ajudar minha noiva com sua trabalho. Now, this is a long winded way of saying Im leaving. Yes, this is a goodbye post. But dont worry the King of the Internet, Chris Peterson, fresh from a masters degree from something I still dont understand in the Media Lab, is coming back! (And maybe the return of m_quinn but hopefully not.) So, in usual admissions counselor fashion Im going to use this last pulpit opportunity for reflection and admissions advice since most people reading this are probably pre-frosh anyway. (And my friends at work who, in the connected world of social media, might need this small reminder that they have no excuse to NOT to maintain our friendship.) Ok Dear Prefrosh, There are still some little things bugging me that I want to say before I leave, so lets clear up some misconceptions. Misconception One: These selective schools arent looking for people like me. I just got back from an admissions conference that had all of the most selective schools in attendance. I was in the room with the entire admissions Illuminati (The Deans of all the Ivys and some other awesome schools youve definitely heard of) and I wanted to tell you some good news: everyone there was thinking about how to diversify their class by race, income level, social/cultural background, and point of view. Maybe you knew that, but I didnt. When I was a high school student in lower middle-class California I would have expected that this room would have been filled with old guys who look like Mr. Burns, say excellent, pet a white cat like the bad guy in the Inspector Gadget cartoons (which none of you have ever seen cause Im old and was probably based on a Bond villain anyway) and laugh like this Mwauh, ha ha ha. And throw in a blue blazer with gold buttons. The didnt look like that, talk like that, and I didnt see any cats. What I did learn, is that these people want you to apply to their schools. They want to find you. So if you have some antiquated notion that these schools only accept people who look like Barbies boyfriend (Ken?) then youre wrong and someone needs to tell you. Not saying youre getting in admissions rates are at ridiculous lows but throw your app in if youre interested. They will likely give you a fee waiver anyway so it shouldnt cost you any money if you cant afford it. Misconception Two: Theres some secret algorithm that selects students, and MIT doesnt doesnt like me because theyre looking for x. Next, Ive decided that the entire process in selective schools admissions is based on one hurtful misconception that annoys me. The idea that you get rejected admission. Stay with me here because it sounds like semantic nonsense. Many people have many different metaphors to describe how the process works. You can think of it as cutting, filtering, funneling, separating, as in the cream separates from the milk it goes on and on. But for the sake of this blog post, lets call it fishing. So if we go with this fishing analogy, then most people would describe the process as fishing with nets. You take a first pass with a big net that has big holes(?) in it, all the small fish slip out and you end up with only medium and big sized fish. Then you do the process again, you increase the hole size, and all the medium fish slip out leaving all the big fish. Yay! We have a complete admit class of big fish! Everyones happy right? True, we have a net full of big fish but now all of the medium and small sized fish hate themselves, get mad/offended, and have a life-long vendetta against college admissions. Everybody assumes this is how it happens, but it doesnt really. And with this analogy you have two major problems: Problem 1.) Were selecting around 1500 kids and using the above net analogy, our net would really be holding about 8000 big fish. Not even halfway there. Problem 2.) It presupposes that other fish are smaller for some particular reason. Like they didnt grow up in warm enough waters or eat the right kind of plankton (what do fish eat?) or have the best fish genetics. Sorry, this analogy is going off the rails.   Heres the point, people end up with a lot of questions, what were the deficient parts of my application, what did I do wrong?, why dont you like me? why am I perceived as a small fish? People always have a hard time with this point. They cant separate the issue of slipping through the net with some sort of deficiency. It has to be something. Isnt it compatitive? Chris, dont sit there and try and tell me that I havent been compared. It has to be comparative, and in this comparison Im not doing well. Of course youre being compared a little. But how? How does a kid from private school New Jersey get compared to a farm kid in North Dakota? They have nothing in common.   I think it may help by changing the analogy. Hows this:   Its not a fishing net, its a fishing pole (with special bait and a special radar). Ok, so now our fictional admissions officer, using a pole, is off fishing. She finds one. She loves the fish and the fish loves her. Repeat 1500 times until youre done. How is this different? One fish at a time. With this analogy you might notice that its impossible to say you got all the perfect, most attractive and largest fish in the lake. You have no idea what fish was lurking under a branch somewhere. Our bait is very good, our radar is very advanced. We have the coolest fish-matching technology in the world, (as evidenced by our outstanding yield numbers.) And still you cant say for sure. So if you didnt get caught, theres nothing to be upset about someone else is going to catch you. This is called having a compelling reason to admit. Some fish made themselves compelling in the process for some reason and we snagged them. But some didnt. You cant take all the fish of course! People are obsessed with objective criteria. You cant stay sane at this job unless you embrace the idea that the fish in my bucket are the ones I want, and I cant get upset about some fish that I didnt catch. On the flip side, you cant get upset that our hook didnt grab you youre still a nice fat delicious fish. Now, I know that youre not likely to be so laissez faire about your future as I am being. Its not my life I realize. But thats where the next point comes in. Misconception Three: There are only a handful of colleges worth going to. At the aforementioned conference, there was also a discussion on familiarity, brand, prestige and fit as it relates to colleges and matching them with the right students. This is also a frustrating point because for some reason, some of you out there are convinced that you can not possibly be successful unless you go to one of these top schools. Dont get me confused, I do work at MIT (at least for another week) and I happen to know that MIT and others have very good programs that in some cases prepare students in a way that others schools might not be able to. But really, people need to get their realities straight. Sometimes its been drilled into you by peer pressure, sometimes from parents and their vicarious behavior. Sometimes (rarely) youve done a ton of research on the topic and youve concluded that you would be a greater fit for one of these schools more than the others. But you know what I think? I think your success is based much more on participation, engagement, work ethic, and fit, than it is on famous professors, famous brand names, and famous facilities. Maybe theres some reason while youll thrive at Big State University, and be sad here. I hope not, but Im just making a point. Is there any doubt that youll learn more, be happier, gain leadership experience, and just be a more sucessful person at Big State if that were the case? No doubt. Sometimes in the process we can sense that. Sometimes in the process its almost as if youre secretly telling us that. And were happy to oblige you. Its like being the general manager of a sports team. If you pick all the players just on talent, you wont do as well as the GM who picks on talent, fit, personality, and enthusiasm. So you really need to go to school where youll thrive. Generally people understand that. Some kids like big cities, some kids like small towns, some kids like clam chowder, etc etc. Theres a saying for this youve all heard anyway, you get out of it, what you put in. Ok, everyone understands this point. What NO ONE seems to understand, (at least from my perception sitting at this desk) is that there are like 3000 awesome universities in this country you can go to other than MIT, Stanford and the Ivys. The United States sells colleges like Toys R Us sells Elmo. Like Amazon sells books. Like Wal-Mart sells goods manufactured in China. We have more colleges in this country than LaBounty has analogies! Why dont you want to attend any of them? Why do you tell me youll never be happy unless you attend MIT? Because youre not being rational about it. And although you never write me saying, Hey Labs, its Bill writing from Big State. Just wanted to let you know freshman year was awesome! I still know it was because I went to a school like that, and at 39 years old Im still an immature sports fan (Go Ducks!) and I still reflect fondly on my friendships and experiences during this time. Thats three final points of wisdom from Labs. Hope you internalize them. If youre an applicant, I bid you good luck. Its a jungle out there in college admissions. You really need to just get zen about it if you go to Big State, youll never know what a parallel world at MIT would have been like, and if you come here youll never know what the parallel world at Big State would have been like. We all like those movies where you can see what your life would have been like if you had only hit that home run, or if you had only sucked it up and asked Sally to the dance, or if your parents didnt move you to a new town when you were seven. But, youre not going to get that chance. So apply to some colleges, get in somewhere, go there, get involved and do well. If Mom or Dad gets too freaked out, just tell them that Labs said to mellow out its going to be all good. I promise. Last point to any people out there over 30 reading this. Youve heard that this generation of kids is a disaster. (Has any generation NOT thought that about their successor?) Youve heard that theyre self-centered, impatient, entitled and have a poor work ethic. As a consequence, youve learned that the future of our country is a risk. Whatever.   I spent the entire year reading the applications of kids who are intrinsically motivated to learn and succeed. Ive spent the last year reading the applications of kids who maintain a life of academics, creativity and fun and arrive to MIT ready for a full sip of the firehose. If anything, they need to learn to take some quiet time now and again. So take it easy, were going to be fine. Sometimes (rarely) youve done a ton of research on the topic and youve concluded that you would be a greater fit for one of these schools more than the others. But you know what I think? I think your success is based much more on participation, engagement, work ethic, and fit, than it is on famous professors, famous brand names, and famous facilities. Maybe theres some reason while youll thrive at Big State University, and be sad here. I hope not, but Im just making a point. Is there any doubt that youll learn more, be happier, gain leadership experience, and just be a more sucessful person at Big State if that were the case? No doubt. Sometimes in the process we can sense that. Sometimes in the process its almost as if youre secretly telling us that. And were happy to oblige you. Its like being the general manager of a sports team. If you pick all the players just on talent, you wont do as well as the GM who picks on talent, fit, personality, and enthusiasm. So you really need to go to school where youll thrive. Generally people understand that. Some kids like big cities, some kids like small towns, some kids like clam chowder, etc etc. Theres a saying for this youve all heard anyway, you get out of it, what you put in. Ok, everyone understands this point. What NO ONE seems to understand, (at least from my perception sitting at this desk) is that there are like 3000 awesome universities in this country you can go to other than MIT, Stanford and the Ivys. The United States sells colleges like Toys R Us sells Elmo. Like Amazon sells books. Like Wal-Mart sells goods manufactured in China. We have more colleges in this country than LaBounty has analogies! Why dont you want to attend any of them? Why do you tell me youll never be happy unless you attend MIT? Because youre not being rational about it. And although you never write me saying, Hey Labs, its Bill writing from Big State. Just wanted to let you know freshman year was awesome! I still know it was because I went to a school like that, and at 39 years old Im still an immature sports fan (Go Ducks!) and I still reflect fondly on my friendships and experiences during this time. Thats three final points of wisdom from Labs. Hope you internalize them. If youre an applicant, I bid you good luck. Its a jungle out there in college admissions. You really need to just get zen about it if you go to Big State, youll never know what a parallel world at MIT would have been like, and if you come here youll never know what the parallel world at Big State would have been like. We all like those movies where you can see what your life would have been like if you had only hit that home run, or if you had only sucked it up and asked Sally to the dance, or if your parents didnt move you to a new town when you were seven. But, youre not going to get that chance. So apply to some colleges, get in somewhere, go there, get involved and do well. If Mom or Dad gets too freaked out, just tell them that Labs said to mellow out its going to be all good. I promise. Last point to any people out there over 30 reading this. Youve heard that this generation of kids is a disaster. (Has any generation NOT thought that about their successor?) The process of replacement, Mbaino giving a young virgin woman as a consolation to the murdered womans husband and taking away the son of the murderer and giving him to Umuofia seems very just. Achebe is subtly suggesting that this logical system of appeasement is more civilized than the white colonists theory an eye for an eye justice system. If the puishment was in the hands of the white men they would have simply hung the murderer. That would be the end of the matter. The victims would therefore get nothing back apart from the possible feeing of revenge. The clan has a very defined and fair structure which allows any man who is hard working and deserving to prosper as far as he is willing to go regardless of his family background. Achebe states that a man was judged according to his worth not the worth of his father. Achebe later reinforces this point with a strong metaphor.  If a child washed his hands he could eat with kings With this point Achebe effectively shows yet again that in some respects Ibo culture appears to be fairer than that of the white colonists. In England in the late 1800s there was a clear segregation between the social classes. He illustrates this through countless examples mainly through the life of Okonkwo using Okonkwo to air personal views and as an extreme. The personal use of Okonkwo allows Achebe to use a descriptive style of impersonal commentary, which allows the reader to gain a real feel of what life was like in Umuofia. This understanding within the reader helps create sympathy during the second part of the book and helps reinforce how the white men destroyed a civilization. This is the reason behind the detailed insight into Ibo culture. It is also interesting to note in chapter nineteen how the Ibo can welcome back an erring member once he has paid for his crime. In many cultures Okonkwo would be treated as an outcast, but this culture has ways of accommodating such a person without destroying him, and in fact encouraging him to give of his best. This again shows the Ibo to be fairer than the colonists. The comparison being that a criminal in the late 1800s in England would find it extremely hard to shake off prejudice and be fully accepted back into society after serving his punishment.  In chapter fourteen we get the first direct introduction to the colonialists. The story is a chilling one of how an entire village was destroyed for killing one white man. This shows the reader the brutality of the white colonists. Criminal profiling is considered to be the process of analyzing a crime scene and using the information found to determine the identity or features of a perpetrator. Although this does not give you the perpetrators name, it can be helpful in narrowing down suspects. For example, a profiling based on a crime scene provides information that may include personality, sex, age, ethnic background, and possible physical features such as scars, tattoos, birthmarks, or height and weight of the perpetrator. This type of information can be used to identify possible suspects, but it also depends on who fits the profile (www.mtholyoke.edu). The process of psychological profiling was first used as a method in America during the 1950s. Investigators found fascinating patterns and similarities between serial killers behaviors. The Inductive profiling model, due to the lack of training and education of those who use it, has been proven to be an unreliable investigative tool. No standard terminology exists to describe offender behavior, and no classifications that have been developed have been absolutely validated. Still, those classifications have been developed using the same structure and philosophy as the DSM, short for The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, despite the intention that the DSM be used for the purposes of treatment, and not being designed for the purposes of criminal investigation. The adoption of this clinical model, then, serves no other real purpose than to lend pseudo-clinical credibility to the classification. The model arguably does not serve the purpose that it was designed for. Additionally, initial statistical analysis based on unproven classifications and non-uniform terminologies are no replacement for a thorough forensic reconstruction, crime scene analysis, and victimological assessment in either a criminal investigation or in a court of law. Given this fact, and given the extensive liability of police departments in high profile cases involving overly enthusiastic investigators armed with Inductive Profile evidence, and the generally unacceptability of Inductive Profile evidence in a court of law, the practice of teaching investigators purely Inductive Profiling methods should end. The Deductive Profiling method, although more time devoted to investigators, will prove to be more valuable because of its beneficial use as a guide, its ability to link together crimes, and because of its extremely high providing of proof value in terms of thoroughly establishing signature and motivation. Briefly, the Deductive Profiling method promotes refection, capability, carefulness, and requires an elevated degree of intra- and extra-departmental unification and communication. The Inductive Profiling method supports selfishness, short-cuts, and has been used before to substitute an experienced investigation into fact. Criminal profiling is used not only to find possible offenders, but it also helps narrow down a list of offenders that the police have already compiled. Although it doesnt work in every case, criminal profiling has helped investigators to catch many criminals. Through assessing the patterns and motives of previous criminals, criminal profiling allows investigators to accurately predict the characteristics of future and current offenders, which allows killers and other perpetrators to be caught before they can continue on to other crimes (www.wisegeek.com). Predictable, criminal profiling does have disadvantages, or cons. Some cons to criminal profiling involve not being able to identify a specific suspect nor reveal a certain individual, let alone an address or phone number. There are even instances when perpetrators purposely staging crime scenes to throw police and investigators off the right track. In many instances, the profiler will not know that area making more room for erroneous conclusions. Furthermore, profilers tend to have more background knowledge in psychopathology than the little background they have in forensic or criminal knowledge. Hence if the investigators and profilers do not work together it can cause the investigation to go unsolved because the information collected from both parties has not been collaborated. While there are cons or disadvantages to criminal profiling not surprisingly there are the pros to criminal profiling. A few advantages comprise of being able to help police with an investigation by making judgment from the crime scene that will give the authorities an idea of how to catch the criminal. There are two types of offender profiling which are the Top-down approach and the Bottom-up approach. The Top-down approach looks at the evidence and data of previous crimes and how they have been solved. The Bottom-up theory seems to profile a criminal in the opposite way. It takes the evidence with the data and builds it up until a reasonable conclusion is reached. Although many people in todays society watch television and see shows that involve criminal profiling, it is a huge misunderstanding of what profiling can truly accomplish. Criminal profilers operating in the sensitive area of criminal investigations receive greater public attention and therefore, will have to display caution in the conclusions they draw in a case. Runes and Magic in Beowulf and The Saga of the Volsungs      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In the Old English poem Beowulf and in the Icelandic The Saga of the Volsungs, a saga representing oral traditions dating back to the fourth and fifth centuries, we see the mention of runes, which were used with connotations of magic or charms.    An unknown author wrote the The Saga of the Volsungs in the thirteenth century, basing his story on far older Norse poetry. Iceland was settled by the Vikings about 870-930, who took there the famous lay of Sigurd and the Volsungs. Native Icelandic poets loved the story of Sigurd and the Huns, Goths, Burgundians, with whom he interacted. This prose story is based on traditional Norse verse called Eddic poetry, a form of mythic or heroic lay which developed before 1000 in the oral folk culture of Old Scandinavia. In The Saga of the Volsungs the hero Sigurd is the one who corresponds best with the hero Beowulf in the Anglo-Saxon tradition. George Clark in â€Å"The Hero and the Theme† mentions: â€Å"The form of Beowulf taken as a whole suggests both the ‘Bear’s Son’ folktale type (especially as we find it in Scandinavia) and the ‘combat myth’. . . .† (286). The â€Å"combat myth† is what this saga is. When Sigurd was born, he was t he grandson of King Eylimi; when Beowulf was born, he was the grandson of King Hrethel. The king said of Sigurd that â€Å"none would be his like or equal† (55), and this proved true; Beowulf as a young man was so strong that â€Å"he was the strongest of all living men† (196). The similarities between Sigurd and Beowulf continue through both works.    The Icelandic skald is the equivalent of the Anglo-Saxon scop. He was a storyteller. Icelandic material builds on a long oral tradition just like Anglo-saxon, going back in their stories to the fourth and fifth centuries (Byock 2). Skalds stayed in the royal courts of Scandinavia like their counterparts to the south.    Beowulf is an Anglo-Saxon narrative poem whose oral traditions date back to the sixth century. We see the first mention of runes in this poem in connection with the magic sword. When the hero is in deadly combat with Grendel’s mother in the mere, he is at the point of   being killed by the monster when suddenly God shows to him the presence of a special sword nearby on the wall.

As our export trade shrinks, so does our workforce and economy. The surplus of imported cars for 2012 has exceeded the exportation by $152 billion. Also the shelf life of cars is 1 year. Every year at the end of the cycle the existing models are sold off at huge discounts to make room for the new models, which is good for the consumer. What are the effects of international trade to GDP, domestic markets and university students. International trade comprises exports and imports, the net result of which affects our GDP. Since our imports exceed our exports our GDP would be impacted by our net exports or deficits. The rippling effect of financing deficits is an increase in interest rates from selling bonds that reduces investments and growth. This further reduces GDP. Domestic markets flourish when there is a demand for local products overseas. If the domestic markets have to compete with imported products it could be a struggle. However jobs can be created for the advertising, sales, and distribution of foreign imports. The effect of international trade on university students has recently brought about an awareness of a vibrant industry in the education services. Of the $35billion worldwide market for international students, the U S was able to capture a market share of 45%, showing a healthy surplus of $12. 6Billion in higher education. A foreign exchange rate is the rate at which one currency would be exchanged for another. It is essentially the value of a currency when compared to another and is determined by two fundamental forces of economics, supply and demand. When the supply of a currency exceeds the demand, the value of the currency falls. However when the demand for a currency exceeds the supply the value rises. When the value of a currency is low the exchange rate is low and vice versa. Exchange rates of currencies are influenced and determined as a result of a country’s income, changes in interest rates, price of goods and changes in trade policies. When income is high, imports are high and exchange rate is low. When interest rates are high there is a demand for U S currency to invest in U S assets and exchange rate is high. When the prices of local goods are high there is low demand for the local currency in favor of high demand for foreign goods and foreign currency. This results in a low exchange rate. Trade with a foreign country could be adversely affected by hiking trade restrictions like tariff. This increases the cost of imports and lowers the exchange rate. How do government choices in regards to tariffs and quotas affect international relations and trade Tariffs and quotas are just two of the direct methods used in trade restrictions. There are also indirect methods of trade restrictions like protecting the health and safety of residents seen in the importation of consumables, time consuming inspections on general goods, special codes for packaging. Some of these restrictions are imposed for legitimate reasons but most of them are designed to protect the domestic producers from international competition. The most legitimate form of trade restrictions used are tariffs, which are taxes governments impose on internationally traded goods and quotas, which are quantity limits placed on goods imported. Trade is good for all countries because they all have comparative advantages they try to implement amicably with the use of tariffs and quotas. However these restrictions occasionally are used politically to influence relationships with foreign countries. Why doesn’t the U. S. simply restrict all goods coming in from China? Why can’t the U. S. just minimize the amount of imports coming in from other countries: The first reason why the U. S doesn’t restrict all goods coming in from China is because this action would belie the main purpose of the World Trade Organization (WTO) which is to ensure that trade flows freely between nations. The U. S is the largest importer of Chinese goods. If the U. S stops the importation of Chinese goods, it is unimaginable what they would do with all these unused products. There would be no production or manufacturing of goods. Unemployment would be high, there would be no source of income and the country’s economy would be ruined. As the largest importer of Chinese goods most of the local U. S companies rely on these imports for doing business. They import spare parts, automibles, manufacturing goods, appliances, electronics and building materials just to name a few. If Chinese imports are stopped the economy of both countries would be ruined as well as the world’s economy. In order to minimize the amount of imports coming in from all other countries the U. S government would have to change the regulatory trade restrictions that are resently in place by increasing taxes and quotas. This would not be in the best interest of the U. S economy. We rely heavily on imports. If we do this, the other companies would retaliate. The Smoot-Hawley tariff was tried in 1930 when tariff on imported goods was raised to an average of 60% . As a result, trade wars ensued and the international trade plummeted f rom $60 billion in 1928 to $25billion in 1938. In 2002 President George Bush imposed a 30% tariff on imported steel, the EU countries, Japan, and China retaliated with threats of $335million worth of tariffs on U. S imports (Colander, 2010). No country has all the resources it needs. There might be lots of oil in the desert but there is lack of food, water and trees. Countries have to rely on their neighbors to fulfill their wants and needs. Even though China might want to impose unfair trade practices yet we cannot shut off their imports, because they are our lifeline just as we are theirs.
